What We Do
We Believe in Service!
The Zonta Club of Farmington / Novi Area, a local club of Zonta International, takes part in, and contributes to, both international and local service projects.
International service projects change, or are re-instated, every two years. Local service projects vary from club to club, and are determined by members and the needs of the communities the club serves.
Zonta of Farmington/Novi Area Service Projects:
Our club has chosen, as our primary service focus, to support the fight against domestic violence through support of First Step, Western Wayne County Project on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. A few of our fund-raising and hands-on service efforts follow:
- We hold an annual fashion event, “First Step is Stepping Out in Style”, in the Spring at a local department store. The store closes and re-opens for this private shopping event. It is an evening of food, fashion and fun! Local restaurants donate food, entertainment is featured throughout the store and shoppers receive a discount on shopping. A raffle is also held with over 30 prizes. All proceeds from this event benefit First Step.
- We chaperone First Step shelter children on the back-to-school shopping event at Mervyn’s.
- We provide “birthday packets” for shelter children to help them celebrate their special day.
- We donate books to First Step shelter library.
- We donate unwrapped Christmas gifts and other items for moms and kids at shelter.
- We participate in various other activities, as the need arises.
Other club activities include:
- Providing comfort to cancer survivors by making and distributing mastectomy pillows to several area hospitals.
- Providing scholarships for the Young Women in Science Program aboard the Inland Seas Schoolship, which offers girls the opportunity to study ecology of the Great Lakes.
- Supporting programs for young girls, including the Child’s Hope Mentoring Summit and the Girls Matter Conference, a conference for young girls and parents hosted by the Women’s Center at Oakland Community College.
Our focused service efforts are pursued in an atmosphere of camaraderie and fellowship with sister Zontians in the local, district and international communities.
